It is with great sadness that the European Volleyball family announces the death of CEV Honorary Member Andreas Stavrou of Cyprus, who passed away in the early hours of Monday at the age of 85. Stavrou was a highly respected and recognised sports personality whose work and contribution were pivotal to the growth of Volleyball in his native Mediterranean island and even further beyond.
Stavrou had played Volleyball and table tennis during his youth at school and club level during the ‘60s. In 1970 he contributed to the organisation of the first official Volleyball tournament ever held in Cyprus. He did join the Board of Administration of the Cyprus Volleyball Federation in 1979, eventually becoming their President in 1992, a position he held until his retirement in 2008. From an international perspective, he did serve the European Volleyball family as CEV Board of Administration member for ten years (2001-2011) and President of the Small Countries Division, now Small Countries Association (2002-2011).
From 1996 until 2008 he was the Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cyprus. In 2008, the European Olympic Committees (EOC) awarded him the Olympic Laurel Award for his exemplary and long contribution to the development of sports in Cyprus and to the Olympic movement.
The Honorary President of the Cyprus Volleyball Federation and of the Small Countries Division, Mr Stavrou was made a CEV Honorary Member at the CEV General Assembly held in November of 2012 in Luxembourg in recognition for his work for the good of the sport.
The most heartfelt condolences are extended to Mr Stavrou’s family and to all members of the Cyprus Volleyball community. May he rest in peace and his legacy live on.
